Is this the future from 007? Daniel Craig to star in remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Daniel Craig could be swapping vodka martinis (shaken not stirred) for a shot or two of akvavit, with the news that he’s to star in the Hollywood version of Stieg Larsson’s novel The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

The James Bond actor is to play the hero’s role of journalist Mikael Blomkvist, with the UK’s own An Education star Carey Mulligan rumoured to be joining him as heroine Lisbeth Salander.

Other actresses in the frame, according to film website Deadline, include Juno’s Ellen Page, Mia Wasikowska, who was Alice in Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland and Australian actress Emily Browning from the forthcoming Sucker Punch.

Craig will start shooting the blockbuster thriller in the autumn and it is scheduled for a December 2011 release.

Apparently, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, George Clooney and Viggo Mortensen were all considered for the lead role, but Craig trumped them all.

The role in the three Scandinavian original adaptations of the late Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy novels was played by Swedish actor Michael Nyqvist, alongside fellow Swede, co-star Noomi Rapace.

The big-bucks US take on the first book however is being directed by Oscar-nominated David Fincher, who’s previously demonstrated his talents with the likes of Fight Club and The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button.

The Scandi version hit UK cinemas in March this year to generally positive reviews. The Swedish follow-up – The Girl Who Played With Fire – features both the same leading actors and hits UK screens on August 27.

The third and final Swedish take on the trilogy, The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest, has yet to be given a UK release date however.

With the new James Bond movie on hold while the studio behind the franchise, debt-ridden Metro Goldwyn Mayer, try and find a buyer, having a new source of income will probably be welcome to Mr Craig.

He’s just shelled out £1.2million for a New York apartment to go with his £4million London home.

It had been reported that American Beauty director Sam Mendes had been lined up to direct the 23rd flick in the 007 franchise, which started with Dr No in 1962.

But production company EON confirmed in a statement at the beginning of this month: “We do not know when development will resume and cannot comment further at this stage.”

If the US remake of the first of Larsson’s books is a success, at the very least, Craig has another couple of films to keep him busy until Bond bounces back.

Larsson, who died in 2004, has now sold more than 27 million copies of his books in more than 40 countries.

Craig meanwhile has just launched another of his forthcoming movies, Cowboys and Aliens, at San Diego’s Comic Con, one of the biggest film, TV and comic book conventions in the world.

A sci-fi fantasy, it’s out next summer.

Playing a god is a tall order for Kevin McKidd

KEVIN MCKIDD may have missed getting the role of Thor in Kenneth Branagh’s new film but he ended up portraying another god instead.

The Scottish actor moved from Norse to Greek mythology to take on the role of sea deity Poseidon in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, released on DVD and Blu-ray earlier this month.

The 36-year-old is no stranger to characters of the historical and ancient world. Among his many other credits are Kingdom of Heaven, set in the 12th century; The Last Legion, set in the 5th century; and as Lucius Vorenus in the HBO/BBC series Rome, set in the 1st century BC.

He told us he hoped he had brought some of his “Scottish, Celtic fieriness” to the role of the gigantic Poseidon, who we first meet startling a fisherman as he emerges from the sea. It was a scene that wasn’t as simple as it looked.

He explains: “The hardest thing for me, and it sounds like it should be a doddle, was the opening shot of me walking out of the water.

“I thought it would be dead easy and I’d be done by lunchtime but it took two days to nail that shot because being 40ft tall, if it just looked like I was walking down to the corner shop to get the paper it wouldn’t work.

“When you’re 40ft tall your bones are much bigger so there’s much more dragging and momentum. I found that really tough, although I didn’t think I would. I had to think about mime class at drama school and about how heavy my character was.”

But he enjoyed the role, in which he is the Olympian father of the title character: “For me it was nice to get back into a skirt, you know? In Rome I wore a skirt for two years straight so getting back into a breastplate and that costume felt like home for me.

“Of course, it was great to be 40ft tall and to have the power of telepathy, to be able to communicate like Obi Wan Kenobi into Percy’s mind.”

The actor had been linked to the Thor role a couple of years ago. He confirmed at the time that his agent had been in talks with Marvel but said that the studio might want someone much younger. Subsequently, the studio issued a casting call for an actor in their mid to late 20s and then 26-year-old Chris Hemsworth – seen briefly as Kirk’s doomed dad in Star Trek – landed the role.

In Percy Jackson, McKidd stars alongside several other Greek deities. We see Sean Bean as Zeus, CSI:NY actress Melina Kanakaredes as Athena and Steve Coogan as Hades.

Okay, time to break out all of the Rome .gifs and screencaps, ONTD!

Neil Patrick Harris leads the dog pack in ‘Cats & Dogs 2′

Neil Patrick Harris lends his voice to Lou, the commander of dog secret agents in “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore.”

Best known by global audiences as the womanizing Barney Stinson in the hit CBS comedy “How I Met Your Mother” — a role which has garnered him a combined five Golden Globe and Emmy nominations – Neil Patrick Harris provides the voice of Lou, the commander of dog secret agents in Warner Bros.’ new 3D comedy adventure “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore.”

Lou, a bespectacled Beagle, leads the subterranean base of DOG HQ, the nexus of worldwide canine operations, where dog agents watch surveillance monitors, break codes, build and test new equipment and…work out.

Lou was once the pup trainee from the first “Cats & Dogs.” Now a proud papa with a litter of his own, he’s top dog at HQ. “He takes the job very seriously. Lou assigns the missions. He’s also like the watch commander, saying ‘let’s go, let’s get this done,’” says Harris.

“You can’t have an ego when you’re doing this,” he concedes, not specifically about portraying a dog, but about voice acting in general. “You’re asked, ‘Can you say it this way?’ ‘That way?’ ‘Can you say it like you’re younger?’ ‘Older?’ You do a hundred different readings and it really becomes a chance to be creative. Ultimately, Lou’s voice is pretty much my own, but with more of an official, businesslike tone.”

Lou is assisted by gadget hound Peek (Joe Pantoliano), veteran agent Sam (Michael Clarke Duncan) and alpha agent Butch (Nick Nolte) who’s about to become the reluctant partner of new recruit, Diggs (James Marsden).

Nolte, who voices the gruff Anatolian Shepherd Butch, adds, “Since it’s a human story played out by dogs, you have to think in human terms—meaning, Butch is primarily a cop. He’s an old-timer, he’s been around and has a certain loping pace. Diggs wants to be heroic and that’s probably how Butch was when he was younger so he tolerates him, but at this stage he really doesn’t want the hassle of being saddled with the new recruit.”

Meanwhile, watching everyone’s back is Peek, a resourceful Chinese Crested with a keen nose among noses, the agency’s tech and communications expert. Much like Bond’s Q, Peek has a gizmo for every occasion. “Peek is the geek,” quips Pantoliano, reprising his role from the first film as the voice of the tiny technician. “He’s always at the center of things in the lab, developing gadgets the dogs use in the field.

“It’s amazing how sophisticated the talking-animal technology has become,” he observes. “I used to love watching ‘Mr. Ed’ because it was never in sync. When the horse talked, it looked like they just gave him something to chew on. We’ve come a long way.”

Also reprising his original role is Duncan as the voice of stalwart Sheepdog Sam. Sam can hardly see through the thatch of hair over his eyes, causing his feline adversaries to underestimate him, but this veteran agent can hear the crunch of kibble or the click of tiny claws a mile away.

“I have a cat and three dogs, so this probably goes on at my house,” says Duncan , of the ongoing campaign between Sam and his pack against their lifelong foes.

But all that could change when Kitty Galore hones her master plan to purr-fection.

Opening soon across the Philippines in Digital 3D and regular format, “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Nicholas Cage too good for luggage!

Nicholas Cage was snapped arriving at LAX. The beefy action star decided he didn’t want to bust a muscle while a lady slave/cart pusher on the phone trails behind him. AND homegirl is most likely on a Nicolas Cage-related call.

I guess being the teacher of a sorcerer apprentice can be too tiring.
